Membership – How to Join ACSSN

Becoming a licensed ship chandler and an ACSSN member involves two main steps. Below is the complete process.

Step 1: Get Licensed as a Ship Chandler

Ship chandler licensing in Nigeria is governed by the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Regulations, administered through the Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB).

Requirements for license:

  • Letter of application to the NCSB
  • Certificate of Registration with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)
  • 3 years Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Customs & Excise approval under CEMA Section 24
  • Company profile, evidence of warehouse/store, financial capability
Fee: ~₦200,000 (license valid for 1 year, renewable annually)

Important Note: The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has no power to issue ship chandler licenses. Licensing authority belongs exclusively to the NCSB under CEMA Regulations.

Step 2: Join ACSSN

Once you have obtained your valid NCSB ship chandler license, you may apply for membership of the Association of Chandlers and Ship Suppliers of Nigeria (ACSSN).

Requirements for ACSSN membership:

  • Copy of NCSB ship chandler license
  • CAC Certificate of Incorporation
  • Company profile and contact details
  • Payment of membership/registration fees (as determined by the association)
  • Successful vetting/interview with the ACSSN executive committee
Note: The association is raising professional standards and is setting up a training school for intending chandlers.
